LINCOLN SCHOOL- EDISON, NJ - GENIUS BAR CLASSROOM
Lincoln Elementary school in Edison, NJ contacted us with the idea of creating a versatile, technology based classroom for the 5th graders. They had a great idea for an iPad friendly 'genius cafe.' Having gotten the name from the Apple store, where customers have to schedule technical assistance appointments at the 'genius bar,' the teacher wanted to have an area in the back where the kids could connect, collaborate and expand their thinking. Utilizing Hon's Initiate panel system and setting the worksurfaces at a higher height of 34", we were able to create the look of a sophisticated, yet inviting space for the kids to learn on their iPads, tablets and laptops. The room had wi-fi internet access and so ethernet ports were unnecessary. We used Hon's power feed options and put electric outlets on either side of each worksurface to allow for easy battery recharging. Hon's Flock stools really finished off this space. The textured satin chrome frame and the blackberry cushion induced a very modern tech-savvy appearance and contrasted well with the light wood tones and bright green used for the other classroom seating.
We utilized Hon's Motivate series to create verstatility in the classroom. Casters on the tables and chairs allowed the teacher to break the kids up into groups of any size quickly. Once in the desired layout, the tables could easily be locked into place. The teacher also wanted her desk to be easily movable, as different lessons and differentiated instruction created a need for her to be in different physical areas of the classroom. At times she needed to be near the Promethean smartboard, centering her students' attention. Other times, promoting independent group learning, she wanted to be in the corner, out of the sight and minds of her students. Hon's SmartLink mobile desk was the perfect solution.
